Perfection line of flatbed scanners is large, and anyone can find a suitable product. But the search can be a little bit tedious. We are going to compare two of the entry-level representatives of the Perfection Line- Epson v370 vs v550. They are similar but different enough to deserve to be compared.
They are both intended for amateur home use and occasional more demanding tasks. Similar in age, released 2011 and 2012, and in features available, the decision between these two can present a dilemma. In this article, we are going to compare them, and hopefully help you make a decision.

Epson Perfection v370
This model has a scanning resolution up to 4800dpi. It scans photos, documents, films. Features that are available show that is built with speed and convenience in mind. This scanner has a scanning resolution up to 6400dpi. It can scan photos, document, films, and negatives. And, thanks to the preheating Ready Scan LED technology, the scanning process begins instantly. If you are scanning text pages, you will be happy to know that you can make scanned documents into editable text with built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition).
All of these features are just the tip of the iceberg. A special feature is Digital ICE light. It enables you to scan old films with good and sometimes excellent results, compared to the dedicated film scanners. It reduces scratches, dust and the damage that those films and negatives suffered through time. Unfortunately, it only works on them, not on photos. For them, a standard provided software-Easy Photo Fix can be of great help. You can select the full auto mode, and the picture quality will be significantly increased, or if you are a more experienced user, try the custom adjustment. It must be said that using Digital ICE Light significantly slows down the scanning process.
To make scanning films easier, Epson has provided with film and negative holders. Unfortunately, some rare and older formats of films and negatives are not supported, so you will have to come with some interesting solutions to stop them from curling while scanning.
The winner is Epson Perfection v550. It can do everything that v370 can, and then some. It is better at scanning old films and negatives, due to the Digital ICE Light.
Epson V370 vs V550: Connectivity

Only connection available is to a computer via Hi-Speed USB 2.0. No wireless connection of any kind here, so that is a disappointment, but the good thing is that it has shortcuts to help you to share your scans on Facebook, Picasa, and some cloud services.
Both models have the same problem – Mac OS. Installation for the scanners is not on the disc, you will have to download it, Many, sometimes strange, problems appear. A reason for frustration can be that you cannot start to scan something and then open another app on your computer. The scanning software will most likely go to sleep unless it is continuously upfront and you are touching the mouse.
The winner is – none. It is a tie. Both scanners have only Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connection, which is a shame because some kind of wireless transfer is almost a standard these days.
Epson Perfection v370
The dimensions are 11.2 x 16.9 x 2.6 inches, and the weight is 6, 2 lbs. The design is borderline outdated. Black box, with few brighter colored buttons.
Epson Perfection v550
The design is not really the strong point of this model, it is boxy and outdated. The dimensions are 11.2″ x 19.1″ x 4.6″ (W x D x H). Weight: 9.6 lbs.
The winner is Epson Perfection v370. It is smaller, lighter, and the design is less outdated.

We all like fights where everything is black and white, good vs bad. But here we have a clash of good against good, so it is difficult to find our favorite. Both scanners will satisfy the needs of an average user, they both do their job pretty well. The cheaper v370 will suffice if you are not planning on scanning old films and negatives, or trying to restore some old photos in digital shape.
But if such a possibility exists, you would be better off with more versatile Epson Perfection v550. Of course, you will have to pay more for that. But if you find it on sale, then a dilemma will seas to be. Go with Epson v550.
